THE LAST TEACHING OF THE BUDDHA

“You should respect each other, follow my teachings, and refrain from disputes; you should not, like water and oil, repel each other, but should, like milk and water, mingle together.

“Study together, learn together, practice my teachings together. Do not waste your mind and time in idleness and quarreling. Enjoy the blossoms of Enlightenment in their season and harvest the fruit of the right path.                                               DN 16,Mahāparinibbāna-sutta

For those who seek Enlightenment there are three ways of practice that must be understood and followed; First, diciplines for practical behavior; second, right concentration of mind; and third, wisdom.                                                                            AN 3-88

If the three ways of practice are analysed, they will reveal the eightfold noble path, the four viewpoints to be considered, the four right procedures, the five faculties of power to be employed, and the perfection of six practices.                            MN 14-141, Saccavibhangha-sutra

※ the perfection of six practices= six pāramitā

Both the eightfold noble path and the perfection of six practices are not another things but their origin is one.

He is not a homeless brother simply because he wears a monk’s rags and carries a begging bowl; he is not a homeless brother just because he recites scriptures easily; he is only a man of straw and nothing more.                                                  MN 4-40,Cūļa-assapura-sutra

Those who are able to concentrate and control the mind, who contain wisdom, who have removed all worldly desires, and whose only purpose is to attain Enlightenment — only those can be called the ture homeless brothers.                                          MN 4-40,Cūļa-assapura-sutra

The mission of a homeless brother is to carry forward the light of the Buddha’s teachings. He must preach to everyone; he must wake up sleeping people; he must correct false ideas; he must help people have a right viewpoint; he must go everywhere to spred the teachings even at the risk of his own life.                                                       Saddharmapundarika-sutra 10

Buddism originally exists not only for homless brothers but also for all people. Then as the practice of a homeless brother, preaching dharma to others is very important. This corresponds to the offering of dharma in six pāramitā.

But it is not easy to preach teachings to other people even if he attains his own enlightenment.

It is just like that difficult to teach and lead children or youngs actually.,even if a man masters pedagogy and gain the qualification as a teacher. To gain the qualification is only the start as a teacher, not perfect. And I think he will grow up as a teacher through the mny many experiences of unsucess and un satisfaction.

I think you know well that even Shakamni-Buddha had puzzled to preach others or not.

When Siddhattha Gotama attained nirvana and therefore freed himself from the wheel of death and rebirth (samsara) – he initially recoiled at the prospect of teaching his experience to other people.1. The Buddha, or ‘Awakened One,’ as he was henceforth known, feared that his teaching (dhamma) was too difficult for a generation that ‘delights in worldliness’ to understand, and that its realization lay beyond their spiritual grasp:

‘Those dyed in lust, wrapped in darkness,
Will never discern this abstruse Dhamma
Which goes against the worldly stream,
Subtle, deep, and difficult to see.’

At this point, however, the god Brahma, who feared the world would ‘be lost’ if the Buddha chose to pass into nirvana without teaching his path, descended from heaven and appeared before him. He then eloquently urged the Buddha, on behalf of all suffering beings, that his teaching was desperately needed and that he should remain in samsara:

‘Just as one who stands on a mountain peak
Can see below the people all around,
So, O Wise One, All-seeing Sage,
Ascend the Palace of the Dhamma.
Let the Sorrowless One survey this human breed,
Engulfed in sorrow, overcome by birth and old age.

Arise, victorious hero, caravan leader,
Debtless one, and wander in the world.
Let the Blessed One [i.e. the Buddha] teach the Dhamma,
There will be those who will understand.’

Moved by Brahma’s passionate plea, the Buddha surveyed the world with his spiritual eye and saw that there were indeed people of different predilections – ‘some with little dust in their eyes and with much dust in their eyes, with keen faculties and with dull faculties … easy to teach and hard to teach.’ His deep compassion (karuna) stirred by this vision, the Buddha resolved to remain in the world and accept Brahma’s request to teach the dhamma to all:

‘Open for them are the doors to the deathless,
Let those with ears now show their faith …’

SN 6-1-1 Brief

It is never easy to preach oters and make them understand even if he attains his own enlightenment. Sakamni-Buddha concidered and deternined to preach to all. The reason is only one which wanted to relieve all living-beings with suffering. Therefore the fourfold noble truth starts from the truth of suffering.

We are so so inferrior to Sakamni-Buddha, how should we do?

The mission of a homless brother is not easy one, so he who apires to it should wear Buddha’s clothes, sit on Buddha’s sheat and enter into Buddha’s room. Saddharmapundarika-sutra 10

Since they are resting in the bosom of Buddha by faith, they are kept far from having a selfish mind, from attachment to their possesion, and, therefore, they have no fear in their daily life or dread of being criticised.                                                         Avatamsaka-sutra 22

“My disciples, my last moment has come, but do not forget that death is only the end of the physical body. The body was born from parents and was nouished by food; just as inevitable are sicness and death.

“But the true Buddha is not a humanbody:—it is Enlightenment. A humanbody must die, but the Wisdom of Enlightenment will exist forever in the truthof the Dharma, and in the practice of the Dharma. He who sees merely my body does not truly see me. Only he who accepts my teaching truly sees me.                                                       DN 16,Mahāparinibbāna-sutta

If you want to save all living-beings who are suffering, you will be able to practice six pāramitās naturally even you do not yet attain the stage of carrying out them.

Sutra of immeasurable Meanings 3

The fourfold noble truth

The truth of suffering : The world is full of suffering. Birth,Old age, Sickness, Death are all suffering. To meet a man whom one hates is suffering, to be separated from a beloved one is suffering, to be vanily struggling to satisfay one’s needs is suffering, In fact, life that is not free from desire and passion is always involved with distress.

The Truth of the cause of suffering :  Strong desire  The Strong desire, have a strong will-to-live as its basis.

The Truth of the Cessation of Suffering : The peacefull state of mind freed from the root of all human passion.

The Truth of the Noble Path to the Cessation of the Cause of Suffering : The Noble Eightfold Path

Now it is true that the needs of human beings may seem to be insatiable. But they fall into two

classes –those needs which are absolute in the sense that we feel them whatever the situation of

our fellow human beings may be, and those which are relative in the sense that we feel them only

if their satisfaction lifts us above, makes us feel superior to, our fellows.

Avarice and usury and precaution must be our gods for a little longer still. For only they can lead

us out of the tunnel of economic necessity into daylight.

“EconomicPossibilities for Our. Grandchildren,”1930,

A golden palace that is blood-stained can not be the abiding place for Buddha.  A small hut where the moonlight leaks in through chinks in the roof can be transformed into a place where Buddha will abide, if the mind of its master is pure.

When a Buddha Land is founded upon the pure mind of a single man, that single pure mind draws other kindred minds to itself in the fellowship of a brotherhood. Faith in Buddha spreads from individual to family, from family to village, from village to towns, to cities, to countries, and finally to the whole world.

Indeed, earnestness and faithfulness in spreading the teaching of the Dharma are what build Buddha Land.                                                      Vimalakīrti-nirdeśa-sūtra

To be sure, when viewed from one angle, the world with all its greed and injustice and bloodshed appears as a devil’s world; but, as people come to believe in Buddha’s Enlightenment, blood will be turned into milk and greed into compassion, and then, the devil’s land becomes a Buddha Land of Purity.                                                                Mahāparinivāna-sutta

Buddha’s mission is everlasting. As long as men live and creatures exist, and as long as selfish and defield minds create their own worlds and circumstances, there will be no end to His mission.
